But incorrect usage of punctuation is not the only thing you will need to look out for when assessing whether there may be an error in a passage: you also need to ask yourself whether everything grammatically checks out. In this post, we’ll be taking a closer look at what exactly it means for a sentence to be grammatically correct (or incorrect) with the aid of a case study: grammatical agreement. (More on what that means below.) First, however, it’s important to clear up any fuzziness attached to the term â€Å"grammatical.† Don’t let yourself be intimidated by the word: there is nothing mysterious about it. When we say that a sentence is grammatical (or grammatically correct), we just mean that all its parts obey a set of rules that control how different parts of speech (nouns, verbs, etc.) fit together. If you learn these rules, all the guesswork is taken out of the process. In fact, you are probably already familiar with most of them. It is just a matter of getting clear on the basic terms and ideas that will help you apply them in context. For this reason, students (in my experience) often find that their quickest gains come in the Writing and Language section as they master the process of translating their â€Å"unconscious† knowledge of English into the conscious rules that will aid them on the SAT. Back to the Basics OK, so you know that for a sentence to be grammatical just means that it obeys a set of rules. But you might still be worried that, implicit grammar of knowledge aside, there will be a bewildering variety of rules for you to learn in order to cover all of the different situations. In fact, there are only a very limited number of concepts that can be used to describe and explain almost any sentence. This means that with sound knowledge of some of the basic principles, you should be in a good position to generalize to almost any new situation. Your goal, then, is to familiarize yourself with this limited body of principles before you sit for the SAT. If you can manage to do that, the test will hold no surprises for you. While we do not have space to go through all of them here, we will try to get a sense of what they are like by examining a bit more closely one important rule, grammatical agreement. Getting Started with Grammatical Agreement When we talk about grammatical â€Å"agreement,† we mean the fit or match between different words in a sentence that indicate that these words go together. In practice, this means that we change the endings or forms of words in order to indicate that they refer to something in common. Some languages require that nearly every word be changed in order to show its grammatical relationships with other parts of the sentence. This has consequences for grammatical agreement. In Latin, for example, adjectives must â€Å"agree† with the nouns that they modify in three things: number, gender, and case. The endings of the adjectives must be changed in order to achieve this agreement, like boni viri (â€Å"the good men†). Even if you don’t know Latin, you will notice that both words end in i, which shows that they go together here. In English, however, there are no requirements to change the forms of adjectives in order to match them to their nouns. Word order and context, not the endings of the words, show us which nouns and adjectives go together: we can as easily say â€Å"black cows† as â€Å"black stone,† with no need to modify the form of the adjective â€Å"black.† (But note that we do need to change the form of the noun cow in order to signal a plural.) As the example of nouns and adjectives may hint, English is not bound by many of the most challenging kinds of agreement that are required in other languages. There are still two important relationships you must look out for, however: subject-verb agreement and pronoun-antecedent agreement. 1. Subject-Verb Agreement Subject-verb agreement is a good place to start. Every sentence will have at least one verb. This verb needs to agree with its subject (the person or thing doing or receiving the action). In English, a verb must agree with the noun in both number and person. â€Å"Number† is singular or plural. â€Å"Person† is first-person (I, we), second-person (you, you all), or third-person (he, she, it, they). In practice, the only errors in agreement likely to trip you up on the SAT are the third-person singular and plural cases—â€Å"we am,† â€Å"you is,† etc., just sound too funny to the ear to pose any real problems. For third-person cases, remember that a singular verb will always end in -s; everything else is plural. Still, you’re not likely to be thrown by a sentence like, â€Å"The dog run and jump.† The error is too obvious. But the test has a variety of ways to make things more difficult. Here are two things to look out for. Separating the verb and subject, and adding lots of description in order to trick your ear into thinking that a plural verb sounds good. An example: â€Å"The box of tools which are useful for fixing broken appliances are on the dresser by the door.† Can you spot the error? The second â€Å"are† (plural) should be â€Å"is† (singular), because the subject is actually the box, which is singular. The sentence is made more difficult by inserting a relative clause (â€Å"which are useful†) that has â€Å"tools† (plural) as the subject, and by adding various plural nouns in order to supply detail (â€Å"tools,† â€Å"appliances†) which might make the second â€Å"are† sound correct. Challenging pronouns that are singular, but often look or sound plural to our ears. Examples include: each, every, any, everyone, everything, anybody, anything, none, no one, nothing, somebody, someone, something. Whenever you see one of these pronouns modifying the subject (or itself the subject), check whether the verb is singular. 2. Pronoun-Antecedent Agreement Pronoun-antecedent agreement is similar to subject-verb agreement in that the most important thing to look out for is determining whether there is agreement in number. Pronouns are nouns like â€Å"it,† â€Å"he,† â€Å"she,† or â€Å"they,† that is, nouns that stand in for another nouns. (The word pro- means â€Å"in place of,† if that helps you remember what a pronoun is.) The term can also more broadly designative possessive adjectives like â€Å"his,† â€Å"her(s),† â€Å"their(s),† â€Å"its,† and so on. By definition, every pronoun has an antecedent, that is, something it is standing in for. Here is an example: â€Å"The dogs went to the park. They made a ruckus there.† They is the pronoun, and it stands in for dogs. Therefore, the antecedent of they is dogs. Pronouns must always match their antecedents in number and, when appropriate, gender. The latter category will ordinarily not pose much difficulty. Matching the number of pronouns and antecedents, however, can be made difficult by the exact same tricks that make spotting subject-verb agreement. In particular, you will need to watch out for antecedents that sound plural, but are really singular. Challenging antecedents: â€Å"Johnsons’ Arts and Crafts was considering merging with their rival Billy’s Magic Markers.† â€Å"Their† should be â€Å"its,† because we are referring to a company, which is a single entity. As a collective, a company requires a singular (not plural) pronoun standing in for it. The same is true for teams, organizations, enterprises, and other collectives. More challenging antecedents: â€Å"Every guy on the soccer team washed their uniform before the big game.† â€Å"Their† should be â€Å"his† because its antecedent, every guy, is singular and masculine. Also, the soccer team does not have one giant uniform (singular) that it is collectively washing. Saudi Aramco is a leading player in safety and reliability metrics within oil industry sector, which is firmly rooted as the major venue of wealth in Saudi Arabia and recognized as the sustainable support to the national economy. Saudi Aramco is currently pursuing recent and rapid expansions to meet international energy demands. There are different factors that contribute to the employee engagement and can result in a better engagement and organizational commitment. What are the general factors (quote reference), then state that this study focuses on three factors i.e. PSS, POS Reward. Explain why these three has been chosen. The first factor is perceived organizational support (POS) which is defined as the degree to which employees believe that their organization values their contributions and cares about their well-being (Eisenberger, 1986). POS is generally thought to be the organizations contribution to a positive reciprocity dynamic with employees, as employees tend to perform better to pay back POS. Reference A sufficient consideration has been given as to why PSS and POS have both been found to be related to employee engagement. According to organizational support theory, PSS should increase employee engagement by increasing POS. The POS resulting from PSS would strengthen employees felt obligation to help the organization reach its goals and increase affective organizational commitment, with a resultant reduction in turnover and increase in engagement. Reference The second factor is perceived supervisor support (PSS). Just as employees form global perceptions concerning their valuation by the organization, they develop general views concerning the degree to which supervisors value their contributions and care about their well-being (Kottke Sharafinski, 1988). PSS should increase obligations to the supervisor and to the organization. PSS increased extra-role performance beneficial to supervisors, and PSS increased POS, which, in turn, led to greater extra-role performance beneficial to the organization. Concerning employee engagement, when PSS is low, employees would believe that they could deal with the unpleasant situation by switching to a new supervisor or minimizing engagement with the supervisor while continuing to carry out usual job responsibilities. POS would entirely mediate a negative PSS employee engagement relationship. Reference The third factor is rewards and recognition. Having a rewards and recognition program in place lets valued employees know that their contributions are important and their efforts are appreciated. Not only will the employees appreciate it, but customers may appreciate it as well. When employees are happy and satisfied with their work, their attitude will be reflected in the service they provide. When employers go the extra mile to keep employees happy and treat team members well, staff members will often go the extra mile to ensure customers are happy. In terms of Social Exchange Theory, when employees receive rewards and recognition from their organization, they will feel obliged to respond with higher levels of engagement (Chapter 2). 1.3 Problem Statement Dramatic changes in the global economy over the past 25 years have had significant implications for commitment and reciprocity between employers and employees and thus for employee engagement. For example, increasing global competition, scarce and costly resources, high labor costs, consumer demands for ever-higher quality and investor pressures for greater returns on equity have prompted organizations to restructure themselves. At some companies, restructuring has meant reductions in staff and in layers of management. A study by YouGovSirajs (2007), the first Gulf People Index, a major employee engagement benchmarking study, designed to help companies improve productivity among staff showed that a fewer than half of Gulf employees think their organization manages to attract the best talent or engage them to perform once they are inside the corporation. Even fewer (just over one third of employees) think their companies are good at holding on to the best talent (YouGovSiraj, 2007). The region also has a weak spot when it comes to companies ability to retain and attract talent. This compounds and confirms the problems surrounding the lack of long-term employee engagement in the Gulf. Only 39% of respondent feel their company manages to keep the best staff. Less than half (47%) believe their organization manages to attract the best talent and manages to engage employees so they perform well (YouGovSiraj, 2007). When evaluating risk, one should take in account of women’s feelings after an abortion. Feelings of depression and anxiety is something woman feel prior, and of course afterwards. Women sometimes choose abortions because of medical issues with the babies, or horrifying circumstances leading to the unwanted pregnancy. Henry P. David, PhD stated after conclusive research â€Å"severe psychological reactions after an abortion are infrequent†. The best indicator of your mental feelings after an abortion is to realize your feelings and mental health prior to the abortion. (ProChoice.org). Usual feelings aft er an abortion is relief, loss, sadness, and grief. It is okay to grieve and you should give yourself time to grieve. Women who have had abortion may have feelings of sadness because they had to make the decision on their own without help from family and friends. Some woman may live in a home life where they are made to feel worthless because of the decision they will make. Some believe women who decide to have abortions will come down with â€Å"Post-Abortion Stress Syndrome†, which is psychological trauma or deep depression, and the American Psychological Association has found no scientific evidence that abortion leads to this type of trauma. Furthermore, experts stated after a study with the National Cancer Institute studied abortions and breast cancer, trying to see if there is any link between an abortion and breast cancer. In the end they settled that there was no link between the chances of breast cancer if you had received an abortion. In the United States, technology has made abortion safer in the last few years. Abortions are performed with in the first 9 weeks of pregnancy. Early termination the better is for the woman, less complications. Most woman receiving their abortion within the first 9 weeks report no complications afterwards. Less than 0.5% of women have serious complication that may bring them back to be seen or hospitalized. Complication rates to rise if the abortion is decided with the pregnancy weeks of 13 and 24. The position of Tracy in this paper is that abortion should be the right of the woman. I do not believe the government or any religious authority should make this type of decision for any woman. Deciding to have an abortion is an important decision in itself and having others dictate you can or cannot choose makes the situation even more confusing. As with most any conflicts, there are usually laws which govern the actions those directly involved, and with abortion comes some of the most well-known pieces of legislature in history. Today in the United States abortion is legal in every state due to the decision of Roe v. Wade. In this case the appellant (Roe) sued the state of Teas on the basis that personal privacy was violated unconstitutionally when the state proscribes that it is unlawful to abort a fetus, other than to save the life of a mother, advised by a licensed medical physician. The ruling decided on January 22, 1973 by the United States Supreme Court was a major milestone in the still controversial topic of abortion. According to the court â€Å"the abortion statutes void as vague and over-broadly infringing those plaintiff’s Ninth and Fourteenth Amendment right† (Roe v. Wade). On the same day of the Roe decision, another case in the state3 of Georgia was also decided on, in the case of Doe v Bolton we the state in question also was found to be in violation of the appellants constitutional rights. The Ninth Amendment: The enumeration in the constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people. The Fourteenth Amendment: Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside. No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or poverty, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws (Legal Information Institute). The position that Timothy has on this subject, is that a woman’s right to abortion should be that of her own decision based on the legislation’s that have been passed. A woman should be able to do with her own body as she chooses, not including using abortion as a method of birth-control. Abortion is not all together without some medical complications. The side effects of abortion are sometimes critical. Some of them involve spotting and bleeding. You could be bleeding for past 30 to 60 days, bleeding which could be very dangerous if care was not sought from a physician. Another side affect is headaches and dizziness, fever and chills, nausea and vomiting, cramping, and diarrhea. Sometimes abortion can even lead rare instances of death. During the surgery the doctors may leave some parts of the fetus inside the body. That is what may cause the affections that may cause damage to the body and or death. The symptoms are high fever, diarrhea, cramping, foul smelling in your discharge and more. Your cervix may get injured and damaged by the surgical tools that are being used during the abortion procedure which will lead to not being able to conceive again. Women who have gone through abortion are at a greater risk of ovarian and cervical cancer. Abortion is a very short p rocedure but it impacts your life forever, and the after affects of abortion varies from physical and psychological effects. Women may develop an eating disorders, or drugs on alcohol abuse, or they may have flash backs about the procedures themselves. Abortions may cause problems in relationships, and it may affect the woman’s sex life which leads to sexual dysfunction. The position that Veronica has on the subject of abortion is that she does not agree with the procedure, and the word abortion can be discussed in two different ways. Therapeutic abortion is one, where the abortion is unplanned due to medical problems with the patient’s health also unknown as miscarriage. Another way is elective abortion when it is planned. In many states planned abortions are illegal and have resulted in up to 70,000 deaths across the world every year. Many arguments support the issue on abortion. One reason why I am against abortion is that you are killing an innocent child that has nothing to do with the mistakes that one makes by having unprotected sex. You should not kill an unborn child because you are ashamed and afraid of what people might say about you. Another reason why she is against abortion is it’s against her religion. â€Å"If I make a mistake and got pregnant, then I would have to step up to the plate and take care and raise my child. It is against my religion to have abortions, because children are a gift from God†. In conclusion of this paper, there are two sides to this debate on whether women should have the right to have abortions in the United States. The research shows that the peer group has more emphases on the pro-choice side of the debate, because the laws of abortion are designed to protect the welfare of the mother and in some cases the fetus, if there is evidence of potential danger, and the fetus may be born with severe disorders, or mother having serious complications that could threaten the mother’s life. In the past, abortions were not as safe as they are today due to advanced technologies, making abortion safer than they’ve ever been before. Abortion is sometimes the best course because of medical issues, and sometimes due to other horrifying circumstances in which some women may become pregnant, such as rape, incest, and or other circumstances that may be legitimately valid reasons, and may lessen the quality of life for the child or mother. In 1973 it was decided by the highest court in the United States (The Supreme Court), that prior statutes infringed on the rights of women in such cases as Doe v Bolton, and Roe v Wade, making abortion legal, and the right of women to choose. Opposing arguments have raised health related issues of having abortions such as â€Å"Post-Abortion Syndrome†, breast cancer, and depression, but upon studies conducted by the National Cancer Institute, and The American Psychological Association, there has been no scientific evidence to prove the accusations. Abortion will probably remain one of the most controversial topics known to man, but the pros, and the laws which protect, are essential in preserving individual rights of freedom in the United States.
